Job Market for Economics Ph.D.'s

In a post in today's Inside Higher Ed, Scott Jaschik discusses the latest annual jobs report from the American Economic Association.

Ne notes:

"A new report by the American Economic Association found that its listings for jobs for economics Ph.D.s increased by 8.5 percent in 2015, to 3,309. Academic jobs increased to 2,458, from 2,290. Non-academic jobs increased to 846 from 761." 

(That's an 11.1% increase for non-academic jobs, and a 7.3% increase for academic positions.)

The bounce-back in demand for graduates since 2008 is impressive:

"Economics, like most disciplines, took a hit after 2008. Between then and 2010, the number of listings fell to 2,285 from 2,914. But this year's 3,309 is greater not only than the 2008 level, but of every year from 2001 on. The number of open positions also far exceeds the number of new Ph.D.s awarded in economics."

And here's the really good news for readers of this blog:

"As has been the case in recent years, the top specialization in job listings is mathematical and quantitative methods."

This Job is Killing Me!

The Indeed website (available for a number of countries) is a well-known clearing house for jobs and job-seekers.Trolling for opportunities there earlier today, I decided to take a peek at trends in job postings relating to econometrics and the funeral business. (At my age, such associations come easily!)

So, based on data for just the U.S., here is what I found. First, I looked at the number of posted jobs (as a percentage of all postings). The trends since the beginning of 2011 are interesting!

Next, I looked at the % growth rates in the job postings since 2005:

Perhaps a cointegration analysis would be in order!

Good Prospects for Econometrics Grad. Students?

Hat-tip to Ben Atkinson for drawing my attention to the fact that in The Chronicle of Higher Education on 17 December, Sara Hebel had a piece titled, "Academic Job Openings for Economists Grew Again This Year".

Not my usual sort of post, I know, but I just wanted to get it out there that my department (Economics, at the University of Victoria, on the West coast of Canada) is looking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The details of the position are available here.

Jobs for Econometricians

My impression is that there is a strong  international market for economists who have strong skills in econometrics. I'm not talking just jobs in the academic community, but also about positions in the private, public, and non-profit sectors too.

 

This blog has a page that list a very small selection of such jobs. This list has never been meant to be exhaustive. That's not what this blog is about. Rather, the jobs listed on that page are meant to be illustrative of some of the various jobs that are available to econometricians.

 

If you're looking seriously for an academic position, especially at the entry level, then the obvious place to start is Job Openings for Economists (JOE). This is sponsored by the American Economics Association, but handles jobs internationally. Although the focus is on academic positions, jobs in other sectors appear in JOE too.

 

Another website that may interest you is econometricsjobs.com. This is a commercial site that lists positions specific to econometrics. It also has international coverage, and covers all sectors of the workforce. Just browsing some of the jobs that are advertised there may broaden your perception of the opportunities that are available to econometricians.

 

There are other sites too, of course. Perhaps some of these will get mentioned in comments to this post.
